What you’re getting into
The Tre Cime di Lavaredo — the "three peaks of Lavaredo" — are three sheer limestone towers rising side-by-side from a high alpine basin in the northeastern Dolomites, the most photographed peaks in the Italian Alps. The classic walk around them is a 10 km loop that starts and ends at Rifugio Auronzo (2,320 m), trailing past three mountain rifugi with the towers always in view, and is considered the introductory Dolomite day hike for visitors with one good day in the region.
The road up to Rifugio Auronzo from Misurina is a paid toll road (around €30 per car in season) and the parking is the main access; the trail begins at the rifugio. Walked counterclockwise, the loop drops gently to Rifugio Lavaredo, then climbs to the Forcella di Lavaredo where the towers' famous north faces — sheer 500 m walls beloved by big-wall climbers — come fully into view. From the forcella the trail traverses to Rifugio Locatelli, a wartime-era hut in front of the towers that's the day's iconic photo stop. The return contours west via Malga Langalm, drops to a small lake, and climbs back to Auronzo. Cumulative climb is about 400 m, split across two short rises.
The Tre Cime trail is open July to early October when the snowfields above 2,400 m have melted; outside that window, the road is closed and the loop becomes a winter ski-touring objective. The route is well marked and not technical, but altitude (2,300–2,450 m), exposure on the second half, and afternoon thunderstorms are real factors. Rifugi serve hot meals and drinks — most hikers stop at Locatelli for the view. Italian and German are interchangeably spoken in the region (this is South Tyrol — historically Austrian, attached to Italy after WWI), and trail signs are bilingual.
