What you’re getting into
The Seceda ridgeline is the most photographed view in the Dolomites — a saw-tooth ridge of pale dolomitic rock above the Val Gardena, with the Geisler/Odle peaks falling away 600 m to the south in a wall of fluted limestone. The classic photograph (greenish meadow in the foreground, jagged ridge tapering to a point) is on most travel posters of the Italian Alps; the actual walk to that viewpoint is short, gentle, and accessible to almost any visitor.
The standard route starts from the Seceda gondola top station at 2,518 m, reached by two-stage cable car from Ortisei in Val Gardena. From the top, follow the broad path south-east along the ridge — gently descending through alpine pasture for about 2 km — to the viewpoint where the ridge tips into the Geisler drop. From here you can see the entire eastern Dolomites: Sassolungo, Sella, Pordoi, and on a clear day the Marmolada. Most visitors return the same way for a 4 km, 2-hour round trip. The longer loop (17 km from the valley floor at Ortisei with 1,200 m of climb) is the no-cable-car alternative for fitter walkers.
The hiking season is roughly mid-May to early November when the cable car runs (2026: May 22 – November 2, daily 8:30 AM–5:00 PM). Starting in summer 2026, cable car tickets require pre-booking in 30-minute slots — book ahead through the Seceda Cableways website. Round-trip cable car costs around €74 in season. The path is well-maintained, family-friendly, and not exposed; you can do it in trail runners. For photographers, the ridge faces south-east — best light is early morning before clouds form. Several rifugi (Troier, Mastlé, Firenze) serve lunch on the high meadows; the Firenze rifugio has the best Sasslong views.
