What you’re getting into
The Otter Trail is officially South Africa's oldest and most iconic hiking trail — 45 km along the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route between Storms River Mouth and Nature's Valley. Established in 1968 and named after the Cape clawless otter sometimes seen at river mouths, it traces a wild, undeveloped shoreline of fynbos-cloaked cliffs, indigenous afromontane forest, tidal pools, and a string of river-mouth gorges that the trail crosses at low tide.
The walk is permit-managed at 12 hikers per day and walked east-to-west over 5 short days. Day 1 is a 4.8 km warm-up to the Ngubu Huts on a forested cliff above the sea. Day 2 (Scott Huts) and Day 3 (Oakhurst) traverse rolling fynbos terraces with rock-pool detours at most beach access points. Day 4 is the trail's crux — 13.8 km with the legendary Bloukrans River crossing, which must be timed to low tide (the rangers issue tide tables at the start). At high water the crossing is impassable; at low water it's wade-deep; at intermediate flow it's a swim with a drybag. Day 5 traces the last cliff section above sea otters and dolphins to Nature's Valley.
Permits sell out a year in advance through SANParks (around R1,800 / $100 per person all-inclusive of hut bookings). As of 2022, the trail also requires a medical clearance certificate signed by a doctor — an unusual but mandated requirement, particularly for the day-4 river crossing. Huts are basic four-bed cabins with mattresses, no electricity, gas hot showers, and resident bush pigs. The trail is walked year-round, with summer (December–February) and winter (May–August) both viable; spring (October) and autumn (March–April) are the most pleasant. Strong walkers, swimmers, and tide-table planners only.
