What you’re getting into
Kjeragbolten is the boulder wedged into a crack on the Kjerag plateau, 984 m above the Lysefjord in Norway's Rogaland region. The football-sized chunk of glacial debris has been stuck between two vertical walls for the past 50,000 years, and stepping out onto its sloping surface — with nothing below but air and water — has become one of Norway's signature photographs. Less famous and harder to reach than its neighbour Preikestolen, Kjeragbolten is the connoisseur's pick.
The hike is 11 km round trip with about 800 m of cumulative gain from Øygardstøl car park. The first kilometre is the steepest: a near-vertical scramble up smooth granite slabs, with fixed chains in the worst places, that does not feel like an introduction to a famous tourist hike. After that the trail crosses three big ridges separated by shallow valleys, with cairned routes across slab and bog, before opening onto the Kjerag plateau and the cliff edge. The boulder sits a few minutes down from the high point. There is no fence and no guardrail; the step across is short but the consequences are absolute.
The hiking season is mid-June to mid-September. The granite slabs are slippery when wet — fatal falls happen most years — and a guide is mandatory in winter when the chains are buried in snow. Øygardstøl car park is paid, around 400 NOK in summer, with a café and toilets. Wind is the other constraint: the BASE-jumper community uses Kjeragbolten as a launch point and they don't jump in strong wind, which is a good signal for anyone considering the boulder step. Pick a clear, dry day with a stable forecast, and the hike rewards the climb with one of the most striking single objects in the Norwegian fjords.
