Kalalau Trail

The Kalalau Trail is Hawaii's signature coastal trek — 17.7 km from Ke'e Beach on Kauai's north shore to Kalalau Beach in the heart of the Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park, then the same 17.7 km back out. The trail traces a sequence of fluted 4,000-foot sea cliffs above the Pacific, dipping into deep valleys and crossing five drainages, including the famously-exposed Crawler's Ledge — a narrow path on cliffside with vertical drops below.

The trail starts at Ke'e Beach at the end of the road and climbs immediately into the cliffs. The first 3 km to Hanakāpīʻai Beach is permitted as a day hike — most casual visitors stop here. The next 9 km to Hanakoa Valley (an overnight option) crosses bony ridges and lush stream valleys, with the Crawler's Ledge section around km 11 — a narrow, exposed traverse where the path is only inches wide above a 100 m drop into the surf. The last section descends to Kalalau Valley and the long beach at its mouth, where backpackers camp in the trees behind the dunes. The valley itself was inhabited by native Hawaiians until the 1920s; today it's a no-services wilderness with goats, mango trees, and the occasional fugitive.

A camping permit is required to hike past Hanakāpīʻai (issued by Hawaii State Parks via gohaena.com — 90 days in advance, $35 per night, max 5 nights) and the day-hike to Hanakāpīʻai requires a Ha'ena State Park entry reservation. The trail closes after major rain (flash floods at the stream crossings are deadly) and remained closed for over a year after major 2018 flooding caused $3 million of damage. Mud, exposure, and Crawler's Ledge make this a genuinely dangerous hike — multiple fatalities every few years. The valley itself is paradise; reaching it demands respect for the conditions.
