What you’re getting into
Orla Perć — the Eagle's Path — is the High Tatra ridge traverse that's considered the hardest waymarked hiking trail in Poland and one of the most dangerous in Europe. The route runs east along the spine of the Tatras south of Zakopane, threading a series of high peaks (Kozi Wierch at 2,291 m the highest) over a chain of exposed scrambles with fixed iron chains, ladders, and pegs bolted into the granite. Approximately 100 people have died on the trail since it was opened in 1903.
The trail is conventionally walked east — Murowaniec Hut to Roztoka — because the steepest chained sections are easier to climb than to descend. From Murowaniec (1,500 m), reached by a 2-hour walk from Kuźnice above Zakopane, the route climbs onto the ridge at Świnica and traces the spine through a sequence of named peaks: Świnica, Granaty, Kozi Wierch, Mały Kozi Wierch, Zawrat, Krzyżne. Sections are one-way only and the route is regulated by the Polish national park during peak summer. Side-exits exist at most cols for parties wanting to bail; weather routinely closes the upper sections after midday thunderstorms.
The walking window is mid-June to early October — winter ascents are a serious mountaineering objective with crampons and ropes. A helmet is strongly recommended; via-ferrata kit isn't strictly required but many parties carry one. The neighbouring Rysy (2,499 m, Poland's highest peak) is a separate 20 km day hike with similar exposure on its upper section. Both peaks straddle the Slovak border; passport-free travel via the Schengen agreement means a Polish-Slovak day-trip is straightforward. Best advice: pick a stable forecast, start at dawn, and turn around if cloud or rain rolls in.
