What you’re getting into
The Rota Vicentina's Fisherman's Trail is Portugal's flagship coastal walk — 230 km along the southwestern Atlantic coast from São Torpes near Sines south to Lagos in the Algarve, traversing the entire Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park. Established in 2012 by local communities to spread tourism beyond beach resorts, it traces the cliff-edge fishermen's paths that locals have used for centuries to reach hard-to-access fishing spots, with the Atlantic on the right shoulder the whole way.
The trail walks in 13 daily stages of 10–22 km, all hugging the cliffs or descending into sandy coves. The route is gentle in absolute terms (3,500 m cumulative climb) but psychologically tougher than it looks — long stretches of soft sand and exposed clifftop are tiring, and there's no shade for entire stages. Highlights include the dune-and-cliff section around Vila Nova de Milfontes, the rias at Almograve and Odeceixe, the surf town of Arrifana, and the dramatic Cabo de São Vicente — mainland Europe's south-western tip and the most spectacular finish in the Algarve before the resort coast.
Walking season is September to mid-June; summer is too hot and the trail temporarily closes some sections in July–August for bird nesting. The Rota Vicentina association maintains the route with red-and-blue waymarks and pre-arranges village accommodation in family-run guesthouses (€40–70 with breakfast). Baggage-transfer services run the full length. Resupply is easy — every stage ends in a fishing village with restaurants, bakeries, and mini-markets. The companion Caminho Histórico (Historical Way) runs inland through the cork-oak forests of the Alentejo interior; together they form the full Rota Vicentina network.

Standard 13-stage São Torpes → Lagos
Walked north-to-south, often in 10-14 days. The trail is mostly sandy clifftop and beach — easier underfoot than a mountain walk, harder than it looks on the long sand sections. Open September to June; summer is too hot.
