What you’re getting into
The Rila Seven Lakes (Седемте рилски езера) are a chain of seven glacial lakes in the Rila Mountains of southwestern Bulgaria, each at a different altitude (2,095 m to 2,535 m) and named for its shape — Tear, Eye, Kidney, Twin, Trefoil, Fish Lake, Lower Lake. The 10 km loop around them is Bulgaria's flagship day hike and the country's most photographed alpine landscape.
The standard visit starts with the Panichishte chairlift, a 20-minute ride that lifts you from 1,585 m to 2,100 m and skips the long forest approach. From the top station, the loop climbs gradually past the Lower, Twin, and Trefoil Lakes, then makes a steep 250 m climb to the eastern rim viewpoint above the Kidney Lake — the postcard panorama with all seven lakes spread below. The descent traces past the Eye and Tear Lakes (the highest) before returning to the chairlift. Most walkers complete the loop in 4 hours including stops; cumulative climb is 500 m.
The walking season is mid-June to mid-September, when the chairlift runs (typically 8 AM–5 PM) and the upper trail is reliably snow-free. Chairlift tickets are around 25 BGN (~€13) round trip. Weekend crowds are heavy — start early or visit midweek. Many tours combine the lakes with a visit to the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery 45 km away as a single Sofia day trip, though both deserve their own visit. The trail is well-marked with the standard Bulgarian colour-coded blazes; sturdy trail shoes recommended for the slick scree on the steep eastern rim.
