About

What you’re getting into

The Premužić Trail — Premužićeva staza — is Croatia's signature mountain walk, a 57 km traverse along the high karst spine of the Velebit mountains from Zavižan in the north to Baške Oštarije in the south. The trail was conceived by Croatian mountaineer and engineer Ante Premužić in 1930 and built entirely from drystone (no mortar, no cement) over three years; it remains one of the most remarkable mountain trail-engineering projects in Europe, threading a path across what was previously impassable karst wilderness.

The walking is conventionally south, in 3 stages of 15–22 km each, with overnights at the well-spaced mountain refuges of Zavižan and Alan and the more basic Skorpovac shelter. The terrain alternates between forested limestone plateaus and bare karst — sinkholes, dolines, and weathered limestone pillars (kamenice) — with views east into the Lika valley and west to the Adriatic from many of the high points. The trail crosses two national parks: Northern Velebit and (briefly) Paklenica, with a UNESCO Geopark designation covering the entire massif. Cumulative climb is around 2,200 m.

The walking season is mid-June to early October — winter snow makes the route inaccessible and even autumn rain can flood the karst sinkholes. The refuges are basic (€10–15 per dormitory bed, bring a sleeping bag) and the trail itself has no resupply between Zavižan and Baške Oštarije — carry food and enough water (water sources on the Velebit karst are scarce and unreliable). Buses connect Zavižan via the Northern Velebit park entrance and Baške Oštarije via Karlobag on the coast. The trail is well-marked with Croatian Mountain Rescue's red-and-white blazes.
