What you’re getting into
The Mueller Hut Route is the signature mountain hike of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park — a 5.2 km, 1,045 m climb to a 32-bunk DOC alpine hut perched at 1,800 m on the Sealy Range, directly opposite the icefall of the Mueller Glacier and the 3,724 m summit of Aoraki/Mt Cook. The hut sits in a glacial cirque with 360° views; the hike up is short by absolute distance but among the steepest in the country.
The trail starts at White Horse Hill Campground at the end of the Hooker Valley road. The first half is the famous "Stairway to Heaven": more than 2,200 metal-mesh steps climbing the headwall to Sealy Tarns, gaining 600 m of altitude in 2.5 km. Most parties stop at the tarns for a breather; from there the path becomes a rough rocky scramble up scree and across snowfields (depending on season) to Mueller Hut. The hut itself is open year-round; bookings are required for the 28-bunk dormitory (mattresses provided, you bring sleeping bags, cookers and food). Day hikers reach the hut in 3–4 hours and return the same way; overnighters stay for the sunset and dawn alpenglow on Aoraki.
The route is doable as a day hike October to May; outside that window it becomes a serious mountaineering objective with ice axe and crampons required and avalanche risk from the slopes above the trail. Bookings open year-round on the DOC website but the bunks fill weeks ahead in peak summer. The White Horse Hill car park is small and full early in season. Weather is the killer — Mt Cook valley is famous for sudden cloud and high wind that turns the upper section into a navigation problem. Pack layers, gloves, and a torch regardless of forecast.
