About

What you’re getting into

The Laugavegur is Iceland's signature multi-day trek: 55 km from the geothermal valley of Landmannalaugar, through the volcanic highlands of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, down to the glacier-rimmed birch forest of Þórsmörk. Most hikers cover it in four days, sleeping in mountain huts run by the Icelandic Touring Association. The terrain changes so completely between days that the trail is often described as four trails in one.

Day one opens in the rhyolite hills outside the Landmannalaugar hut — the neon-coloured mountains the route is famous for — and climbs steadily across geothermal vents and obsidian fields to Hrafntinnusker, a windswept hut at 1,050 m. Day two drops dramatically off the plateau down Jökultungur to lake Álftavatn, swapping moonscape for moss and water. Day three crosses braided glacial rivers to the Emstrur huts near the Markarfljót gorge. Day four winds through black sand, more river crossings (the Þröngá being the notable one), and finally into the birch woods of Þórsmörk, a valley enclosed by three glaciers.

Practicalities decide the trip. The season is short — roughly mid-June to early September — and the huts book out months in advance. You can camp at each hut for a lower fee, but tent space also fills up in peak season. Rivers must be forded barefoot or in sandals; expect at least three crossings on the route, more after rain. Weather changes fast, and snow is possible year-round at Hrafntinnusker. A waterproof shell, gaiters, and dry socks matter more than fitness. Many hikers extend the trek by continuing south from Þórsmörk over the Fimmvörðuháls pass to Skógar — a separate, harder day between two glaciers that doubles the experience.

Suggested itinerary

Suggested 4-day route

The canonical Ferðafélag Íslands (Icelandic Touring Association) split, walking north to south. South-to-north is also possible but climbs ~600 m more. Huts must be booked months ahead in season (mid-June to early September); outside those dates the trail is unreliable due to snow and swollen river crossings.

ShortcutWeather alternative

Combines days one and two into a single 24 km push from Landmannalaugar directly to Álftavatn, skipping a night at Hrafntinnusker. Worth considering if Hrafntinnusker is fully booked, if a storm makes the high plateau dangerous, or simply to shorten the trek to three days. Long but mostly downhill in the second half once you cross the Jökultungur ridge.
