About

What you’re getting into

The Kungsleden, or "King's Trail", is Sweden's flagship long-distance walk — 440 km through Arctic Swedish Lapland from Abisko in the north to Hemavan in the south. Established in the early 20th century by the Swedish Tourist Association (STF), it threads four national parks (Abisko, Stora Sjöfallet, Sarek, and Pieljekaise) and traverses a landscape of birch forest, glacial lakes, and treeless alpine tundra. For half its length, the trail lies inside the Arctic Circle.

The most-walked section is the northern 105 km from Abisko to Nikkaluokta — usually done in 6 to 9 days, with mountain huts every 15–20 km, the Tjäktja Pass at the trail's high point (1,150 m), and a half-day side-trip option up Kebnekaise (2,096 m, Sweden's highest peak) from the Singi junction. Beyond Nikkaluokta the trail crosses the wild interior — Sarek National Park's roadless wilderness lies just to the west — and continues through Saltoluokta, Kvikkjokk, and the empty highlands south to Hemavan. Boat crossings at Teusajaure and Laitaure are part of the route; STF runs small rowboats with a two-trips-back rule (row across, row back, row across — so the next walker finds the boat on their side).

The walking season is mid-June to mid-September; the rest of the year the trail is the *winter Kungsleden*, walked on skis or snowshoes with overnight stops at the same huts. STF cabins offer dorm beds (~SEK 600/€55 per night) and a small shop selling freeze-dried food, beer, and supplies — pre-booking isn't required for individual cabins (first-come-first-served), but membership of STF gets you a 50% discount. Wild camping is permitted under the Swedish "freedom to roam" right (allemansrätten). The trail is well-marked with red painted blazes on stones and the iconic red wooden St. Andrew's crosses on poles for winter visibility. Mosquitoes in July are notorious — bring a head net.

Suggested itinerary

Standard 25-day Abisko → Hemavan

Most walkers cover only the famous northern Abisko → Nikkaluokta section (105 km, 6-9 days). The full trail to Hemavan takes 20-30 days and crosses four national parks. STF cabins every 15-20 km offer food, beds, and saunas; boat crossings are needed on several lakes.
