About

What you’re getting into

The Kepler Track is the third of New Zealand's "Big Three" Great Walks in Fiordland — a 60 km loop above Lake Te Anau, purpose-built between 1986 and 1988 to take pressure off the heavily-booked Milford and Routeburn tracks. It's the only Great Walk that was designed from scratch as a walking circuit rather than retro-fitted from existing pack tracks, and it shows: the route is graded gently, the huts are sized for the demand, and the alpine ridge above the bushline is one of the best high-mountain walks of any Great Walk.

Day 1 climbs steadily from the control gates car park through beech forest to the bushline at 1,200 m, then traverses across open tussock to Luxmore Hut. From the hut a short side-trip leads to Mt. Luxmore (1,472 m) and the caves below the summit. Day 2 is the alpine highlight: a 15 km ridge walk along the Mt Luxmore-to-Iris Burn ridgeline, gradually descending past Forest Burn and Hanging Valley shelters to drop steeply into Iris Burn Hut at the head of the valley. Day 3 and Day 4 contour through silver beech forest along the Iris Burn and around the lake shore to Moturau Hut and out to Rainbow Reach. Cumulative climb is around 1,500 m, concentrated almost entirely in day 1.

The Great Walks season runs late October to late April; outside it, the high section is avalanche-prone and the huts unstaffed. Bookings open in mid-year on the DOC website and Kepler — being the least famous of the three — is the most realistic to score. Walking direction is your call (DOC suggests counterclockwise so the steep day-1 climb is the morning's work); both directions are well marked. The classic 4-day split sleeps Luxmore-Iris Burn-Moturau, with most walkers shuttling out from Rainbow Reach to save the last forest section. The Kepler also hosts the legendary Kepler Challenge mountain race each December — the same 60 km run by elites in under 5 hours.

Suggested itinerary

Standard 4-day Te Anau loop

DOC's recommended split is 4 days walking counterclockwise from the control gates near Te Anau — the hardest climb up to the bushline is done on day 1. Most loops finish at Rainbow Reach with a shuttle or pickup back to Te Anau, saving the last 9 km of road-grade forest path back to the original car park.
